Here’s to the Baby Bucket List –
You know the look – the one when you tell your work colleagues you’re going on maternity leave and they give you the ‘what – a whole year of holiday’ look. Grrr.
Anyone who has a child knows that maternity leave, albeit a lovely and reflective time, is also exhausting and a job in itself. I don’t begrudge any parent that takes time off from their career to make the most of their time with baby.
So, when I recently saw research by online experience day website IntoTheBlue.co.uk that taking a year off work and travelling is top of most Brits’ bucket lists, it struck a chord with me.
Because when baby came along, I was determined to make the most of our time together and jet-setting was very much part of it.
So with the end of my maternity leave coming to a close, I’ve been thinking about where I want to take him next. Without further ado, here is my ‘Baby Bucket List’ of places I want to take Boo when he gets older….
- The Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA
We definitely need to get past the toddling stage, and be comfortable on our feet before we start thinking about going to the edge of Earth! However, the Grand Canyon is such a spectacle, that I simply cannot wait to take him here. My husband and I visited the Canyon just before Boo came along, and it still remains one of my best holidays. It’s no surprise that it was one of the top places in the Into The Blue survey either.
Disney World, Florida, USA
It remains the best holiday I ever had as a kid. Even though I was about nine years old at the time, I have such magical memories about the Epcot Centre and SeaWorld and of course meeting Minnie Mouse. When Boo is old enough to create memories he can remember, we are most definitely returning as a family. I’m already giddy thinking about it…
Aphrodite’s Rock, Cyprus
Another nostalgic one, but as a kid, I fondly remember swimming around Aphrodite’s Rock in Cyprus and being told that it would help me meet my husband! That aside, it’s simply one of the most beautiful crystal clear beaches, with awesome local food. And Cyprus is only a quick flight away. With his Greek heritage, my little one cannot miss out on holidays to the sun, and I’m looking forward to reliving my childhood over again!
Shibuya Crossing, Tokyo
Tokyo is one of my favourite places in the world. It’s kitsch, it’s cute, it’s crazy, I love everything about it. Superbly foreign, wonderfully weird – I fell in love with Tokyo when I visited on my own and vowed that if I ever had a child, I’d bring him back with me one-day. Not only does it feel very safe, but it’s got so much to see and do. Even just walking to the famous Shibuya Crossing is an event in itself.
Sunset Boulevard, LA, USA
In case you couldn’t tell, I LOVE USA. Specifically, LA. I’ve had so much fun partying in this city, that I am excited about the day my son is old enough to a) drink and b) come to some of the best rock clubs in the world with me. The heritage of rock n roll, the wild days of The Doors and Motley Crue. Oh boy, I can’t wait – get those shots lined up!
