Family Friendly and Zika-free – here’s the lowdown on the top places to visit this half-term
I find time of year pretty depressing – with the thought of summer leaving us and winter looming, I need something to look forward to. This is what the October half-term holidays are all about, I remind myself! Usually this time of year we’re thinking of somewhere tropical like the Caribbean, but with the Zika outbreak, I’ve been in two minds.
We asked our friends at Five Star Families for their top three recommendations of family-friendly destinations and hotel inspiration, that are currently unaffected by the Zika virus:
- The Canary Islands
In roughly four hours from London, you can bask in the sunshine that The Canary Islands are known for. With a boost in high-end hotels of late, the islands are also a great spot during the October half-term as they are still lovely and warm between September and November. If you want a lively resort for children, check out H10 Playa Meloneras Palace . It boasts three luxurious swimming pools, a mini club for children, and a spa inspired by Antoni Gaudí for parents.
Madeira is often overlooked as a destination, but it’s geared towards families and is helpful that it’s not too far away. One of our favourite picks is the surprisingly affordable and chic, Hotel da Vila – a great little find for discerning guests within a budget. The focus is on interior design, and with its very own relaxing hydro-massage spa, it’s hard to fault it.
3. Cape Town
For a real escape for adults and children alike, one of our all-round favourite destinations is Cape Town, South Africa. From Table Mountain to Robben Island, it has lots of places of interest to visit, while the ‘groms’ will love trying out surfing at Hout Bay, as Mum and Dad enjoy a sundowner on the beach. A fabulous and perfectly placed hotel is Cape Grace – within walking distance to restaurants and shops at the V&A Waterfront. If you’re a connoisseur of fine taste, you’ll enjoy ‘Bascule’ its exclusive Whiskey bar, along with complimentary port at the hotel. Kids will love the walkways near the hotel that seals often swim up to.
