Ever since meeting Jack the pony at a local community event, my son has been enthralled by our four-legged friends. I looked in to horse riding classes, but the weather was too hot, plus he’s only three!
So, I did what any self-respecting Mother would do… I got him a My Little Pony Twilight Sparkle Magic School of Friendship playset.
And I’m in no way reliving my youth, nope, no way 🙂
But there’s more to it than just cute ponies that I secretly want to play with!
My son is an only child and I want him to be a well-rounded individual. When I think back to my childhood, I was exposed to everything from Barbie dolls to racing cars, mainly due to having a brother. It allowed me the freedom to explore different toys and themes without prejudice – something I’m eternally grateful to my parents for.
I’m very pro gender universal toys. I think it’s important for this generation to grow up without the stereotypes and biases we had. I have no qualms with him playing with dollies or teddies, cars or trucks – in fact, I want him to have them all. Which is one of the main reasons I decided to get the My Little Pony Twilight Sparkle Magic School of Friendship, to balance out the other toys in his growing mass of cars and trains.
Unboxing the Pony
To the exciting bit.. unboxing.
Well, this is particularly riveting because it comes in a huge box with a cut out insert to show you the excitement that lies inside.
Ripping open the playset we got straight to business. Inside there’s 24 accessories, a playset and pony figure. It’s pretty sizeable standing proud at 22 inches tall, and there’s three tiers of fun to explore.
It took about 20 minutes of concentration to put together, it’s not difficult but does take time to achieve such a masterpiece!
Play it Safe!
This playset is basically all about friendship and play and going on your own adventure. There’s plenty to discover and play with, with lots of cute little touches. My son particularly LOVES the lights and music, as well as the little front door which opens at the touch of a button.
The lift seems to bring the most excitement though. Bringing ponies (cars, trains…) up and down seems to bring endless amounts of fun!
The instructions say that the pony tails are great to play with, style and brush. This is probably the only thing my son didn’t do. Sometimes I guess, we can’t fight the gene pool!
But he loves playing with it and has hours of fun making up stories and letting his imagination run free. It’s really lovely to see him play with something different too. Although it didn’t take long to hang dear pony by her hair from the top window.. boys will be boys!
This ‘school play’ theme is actually really handy for this age group, since my son starts school next year (sob). Perhaps it will prepare him for the months ahead, when I show him that pony does seem reading in between her fashion shows!
Speaking of which, the fashion classroom is where you go to dress pony up and host fashion shows. This was a little bit lost on him, but not me!

In a Nutshell
This is an absolutely brilliant toy that brings hours of fun and joy. What I particularly like is that it provides a canvas for kids to project their own imaginations on to.Use the lift, press the buttons, bop to the songs – do it all, and do it your way. My son has fallen in love with My Little Pony and what’s more, I have too (30 year’s on)!
