Sharing the love this Thanksgiving

Be honest, have you ever wondered what the point of Thanksgiving is?! I kind of new it was a festive celebration, but couldn’t get my head around it being a month before Christmas, and always on a Thursday (still don’t’ understand that)!

And then my American friend Bryan explained. Aside from it being a celebration, it’s also a clever way of accommodating two families during the festive period – one gets thanksgiving, the other Christmas. Now I get it, and because I have a baby, this makes even more sense.

So, in celebration of the (other) red, white and blue, here’s a few American things I’m giving thanks for this thanksgiving…

Great Sitcoms

Cheers, Frasier, Arrested Development, Roseanne, Modern Family, Mork & Mindy, Family Guy, Seinfeld, Curb your Enthusiasm – I could go on, but alas I only have ten fingers and half an hour until my baby wakes up! No one, except for maybe us, do sitcoms better than America.

House Music

When we think of dance music, we instantly think of Ibiza. Wrong. House music started out in the early 80s in the basements and clubs of Chicago, USA. Legendary DJs like Frankie Knuckles bringing this electronic style of synth and strings to the masses, we have sooo much to thank our American friends, for bringing the greatest form of music into our world.

Valet Parking

John, my friend from LA comes to visit now and then, he is still shocked by our lack of valet service in the UK. In America, you go somewhere, there’s a guy there ready to take your car away and do the parking for you. Call it lazy, call it a great way to bring in money, but I call it dam helpful!

Barack Obama

I’m not going to pretend that I know much about our politics, let alone another country’s, but I am going to say this – they voted in the first black American president, and that’s a pretty big deal. Barack is a great role model for young Americans of every background, and something we should applaud our American friends for.

Farmers Markets and Health Shakes

Americans get a bad rap for all the junk food and supersize nomnoms that have made their way over the pond. And so they should! Yet there’s another side that should be celebrated and that’s fresh and locally sourced food from Farmer’s Markets and new age juices like kale and cucumber too.

Robert de Niro

Come on, is he not the GREATEST actor of our time. Yeah, I’m talkin’ to you! Whether you like him in the hard man role of his early days, or his matured subtle comedic performances, it’s hard to think of a time when Robert de Niro wasn’t in film. Legend – enough said.

Ahh, if you were around in the 80s, then Dynasty was the best thing on TV. Even better than Whose Line is it Anyway and that was pretty dam good! The glamour, the tryst, the deceit, the excitement. These soaps had it all, and are also to blame for some pretty heinous shoulder-pad with perm fashions from that era!

Some say it’s a German creation. Regardless, lets not get caught up in the semantics, because whoever did invent the humble pattie delight, no one can argue that Americans made it sexy, accessible and for the masses. If you go to Las Vegas, then you can even try your luck at the ‘Heart Attack Burger’ in the old town.
