Choose Life: 20 years on from Trainspotting

Can you bloody believe that Danny Boyle’s iconic film ‘trainspotting’ is 20 years old. TWENTY YEARS OLD, I remember watching it at University.

I remember the posters, the rousing soundtrack, and how HOT Ewan McGregor was <dribbles>… at least that hasn’t changed.

Fast forward on to 2017 and T2:Trainspotting is back. I’ve already planned the outfit, booked cinema tickets, found someone, anyone who can look after my child, so I can enjoy two unadulterated hours of movie magic. Fuck yeah I’m excited!

We grew up together

You will know because you grew up with me, but there’s something about that film that struck a chord. The hope, the pity, the party scene, the anarchy, the absolute hedonism of a specific time in all our lives that could never last, except in our memories.

And now, twenty years older, I find myself looking back at those memories realising how quickly life passes us by without us ever really noticing. I’m 20 on the inside, nearly 40 on the outside.

Back in 1996 we were told to chose life, a job, a career and a family, a big fucking television, washing machine and car. Tick, tick, tick…

Now in 2017 it’s “Choose Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and hope that someone, somewhere cares. Choose looking up old flames, wishing you’d done it all differently…”

Choose Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and hope that someone, somewhere cares

Choose a zero hour contract, a two hour journey to workAnd choose the same for your kids, only worse…”

Are you nodding along with me? Of course you bloody are. We are all sitting on our DFS sofas, watching our undesirably big Sony TV’s, half-watching Twitter on our iPhones,  as our child plays with more toys that it could possibly need, acquired over the gluttony of Christmas. Danny Boyle’s monologue is more than a few clever words. It is a summary of the world that binds us – whoever we are, whatever we do, we are ultimately all choosing life.

T2: Trainspotting is out on 27th January. See you there!

PS: Ewan McGregor – if you happen to be reading this, I expect you are -I love you!

  • I can’t WAIT to see this, it feels so….I don’t know….important! I think because, as you say, 20 years ago I watched this beginning my adulthood and now I’m feeling all middle aged and a bit of a fail at times. I guess I am hoping that it both reminds me of my younger days and shows me that the life I chose, I chose right.

I was so in love with Jonny Lee Miller, I still am <3

  • It’s a milestone right! Like the film we grew up with, it’s almost our legacy to go and see it! I’m going tomorrow… SO EXCITED!
